Founder’s Letter

This guide is what I would have
wanted to receive ten years ago,
before my first project.

I have been building cinema rooms for more than ten years. In that time I have watched the industry change at speed: first from boxes with speakers in the corner to full media rooms; and now to spaces on a par with commercial Dolby Cinema and IMAX auditoriums. But one thing has not changed. The owner is still left alone with a decision that has dozens of engineering layers — and almost no one explains them in plain terms.

When I see a finished project where thirty million has bought a beautiful but acoustically failed room, it always saddens me. Not because someone did poor work — but because the owner did not know what to ask.

I wrote this guide for the person now at the architectural stage of their own home, or already into the fit-out. For someone who understands that a cinema is neither a toy nor an option. It is an engineering system of nine disciplines, each of which requires its own calculation. And a mistake in any one of them means either costly rework or a quiet disappointment every single evening.

It gathers what we at Cinema Project tell every client at the first meeting. The structure of the budget. The critical mistakes owners make. The questions worth asking any installer — not necessarily us. This document is honest. If after reading it you choose a different contractor, then we have done our job well.

Today I design to the same international industry requirements as commercial reference auditoriums: Cinema Project is a member of CEDIA — the global association of home-cinema designers and integrators that shapes the industry’s standards. Room geometry, viewing angles and acoustics in our projects follow the recommended practices of CEDIA/CTA, THX and SMPTE. But a standard, to me, is a tool, not a showcase. It exists precisely so that everything works exactly as intended, every evening.

§ 1.1 · Context and Culture

Cinema as a Private Ritual

The culture of private screenings is nothing new. In the 1930s the major Hollywood studios had their own screening rooms, where producers reviewed material before release. Douglas Fairbanks had an eighteen-seat theatre at home — one of the first in the world. Walt Disney built a cinema inside the studio headquarters to review animation tests daily. Later, George Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch gained the Stag Theatre — the benchmark reference that still opens any conversation about private cinema engineering.

In Russia this culture is only now taking shape. The first generation of homes with true cinema rooms appeared in the mid-2000s — and almost all were copies of European examples, ordered turnkey from Western integrators. The second generation, 2015–2020, already had a local engineering practice, but still followed the logic of “a pretty room with equipment.”

Today we are seeing a third generation. The cinema is ceasing to be a status showcase and becoming a functional space around which part of home life is organised.

One thing has changed: the owner no longer treats the cinema as an option. It is a distinct engineering category — with its own standards, methodology and architectural requirements. Like a wine cellar or a professional kitchen, it calls for design, not just furnishing.

The three reasons the private cinema has stepped out of the shadows to become a category of real estate in its own right are examined on the following spread.

The Culture of Ritual

A private cinema turns a screening into an event — with its own dramaturgy,
duration and afterglow. Below are the four phases of that evening.

Before the Screening

The lounge before the auditorium is not a passage but a prologue. Dimmed light, a glass of champagne, an ambient reel on an ultra-short-throw projector, quiet music through the multiroom system. Guests settle in for the screening — as in a hall before a concert begins.

The Invitation

Opening the auditorium door is the point of transition. The lighting fades smoothly under a smart-home scene. The recliners wait in their ready position. The dynamic opening ident begins — the same one shown in a commercial IMAX before the feature.

The Screening

Full immersion. Reference-level sound pressure. The lights fully out. No phone screens, no neighbours, no “let me grab the popcorn” pause. The film plays exactly as the director intended — from the first frame to the last.

After the Finale

The credits are not an ending but a transition. The lights rise slowly. Guests return to the lounge, where a humidor, wine and conversation await. Often it is these twenty minutes after the finale that the whole evening was really for.

Media Room
Media Room

Combines functions: film, sport, games, living room. Part of the living space. Works with partial blackout. Requires acoustic compromises. Ideal for families who want to “watch well” but are not ready to dedicate a separate room.

Dedicated Cinema
Private Cinema

A separate room, purpose-designed. Full blackout, reference acoustics, an isolated space. All nine engineering systems resolved without compromise. This is the “true cinema” — the benchmark for most private residences.

Architecture and Geometry

Room proportions, ceiling height, aspect ratio. Sets the frame for every calculation that follows.

Soundproofing and Vibration Isolation

Floating floor, independent ceiling, decoupled walls. Isolates the auditorium from the rest of the house against airborne and structure-borne noise.

Acoustic Treatment

Absorption panels, diffusion, bass traps. Shapes RT60, removes standing waves, sets up the listening position.

Video Chain

Projector, screen, optics, switching. Chosen after the room geometry is calculated, not before.

§ 4.1

Choosing Equipment
Before Designing the Room

What Happens

The client sees a JVC NZ900 and Focal Maestro Utopia in a showroom, falls in love, and buys. Then tries to “fit” them into a 4.5 × 6 metre room with a 2.8 m ceiling. Often a second mistake follows: the Focal Maestro is a reference stereo speaker for two-channel music, and its physics is fundamentally different from cinema. Room geometry and chosen equipment are simply incompatible.

Consequences

Flagship speakers reach only 40–60 % of their potential. The projector runs into projection-angle limits. The client spent a reference-auditorium budget and got a media-room result.

The Right Way

First, an acoustic calculation in EASE 5.0. Then the room standard (Dolby Atmos 7.2.4 / 9.2.6 / 13.4.6). Only after that is equipment selected for the task and the geometry. Never the other way round.

Underestimating Vibration Isolation
of Floor Slabs

What Happens

The cinema is on the ground or basement floor, with a bedroom above. Airborne soundproofing was calculated; structure-borne was forgotten. Bass from the LFE channel travels through the load-bearing slabs into the rest of the house.

Consequences

Within three months of handover, a family conflict: evening screenings wake the children. The finished ceiling in adjacent rooms is opened up and the hangers reworked. The rework costs up to 15 % of the cinema budget.

The Right Way

A floating floor on joists, an independent ceiling on isolation hangers, walls decoupled on a “room-within-a-room” principle. All calculated for the room’s mass and load spectrum.

Wrong Room
Proportions

What Happens

The architect designed a perfectly symmetrical cube, 6 × 6 × 3 metres. Or a flat box, 8 × 4 × 2.5. The room’s natural resonances line up into sharp peaks at low frequencies.

Consequences

In the bass, standing waves that no calibration or subwoofer count can cure. Boom at one seat, a null at another. A flagship system plays worse than a budget one in a correct room. The only fix is to strip it out.

The Right Way

Proportions from the Louden ratios (1:1.4:1.9) or Sepmeyer / Volkmann. Avoiding cubes and flat shapes. Calculating the modal frequencies is a mandatory step before the layout is approved.

Forgotten Services
and Conduits

What Happens

A 12-metre HDMI run is not chased into the wall during the first-fix stage. The power feed is undersized. The extract for the equipment room — housing 4 kW of amplifiers — is forgotten.

Consequences

The finished plasterboard is opened up. Decorative panels are cut. Cable is run along the skirting — and the clean interior is broken. In the worst case, plaster and paint are redone — plus 2–3 weeks on the schedule and 10–20 % on the budget.

The Right Way

A complete low-voltage routing plan before final finishes: HDMI, Cat6A, fibre, speaker runs and power lines with 20–30 % spare. Coordinated with the electrician and the finishing trades.

Cutting Corners on Calibration
and Processing

What Happens

Flagship speakers are installed, but there is no professional calibration in StormAudio, Dirac Live or Lyngdorf RoomPerfect. The system runs “out of the box” on factory presets.

Consequences

A 15-million system plays worse than a properly calibrated one costing six. The frequency balance is skewed, inter-channel timing is unaligned, the centre is not anchored to the screen. The investment in speakers is squandered.

The Right Way

Professional acoustic calibration is a mandatory stage, not an option. With REW or Smaart measurements at several positions, and per-channel setting of delays, levels and equalisation.

Ventilation Without an Engineering
Calculation

What Happens

The ventilation is designed by a general HVAC engineer without regard for the cinema’s specifics. The heat output of the projector and amplifiers is not calculated. No acoustic silencers are fitted to the ducts. The ducts become sound conduits — the background noise in the room is too high.

Consequences

In quiet scenes the ducts are audible. The projector overheats and throttles into protection during the third hour of a Lord of the Rings marathon. The director’s silence in Dune is buried under background hiss from the ventilation.

The Right Way

A calculation of air exchange and heat load for the equipment. Acoustic silencers on both supply and extract ducts. The target: room silence at a level where the system cannot be heard.

Aesthetics as the Final
Stage, Not the First

What Happens

The interior designer arrives last — once every engineering decision is already fixed. They see acoustic panels, ventilation grilles, cable trunking — and want to “cover it up nicely.”

Consequences

A conflict: either beautiful or acoustically correct. Panels are wrapped in decorative fabrics that kill their effect. Technical grilles are hidden — and air exchange is disrupted. The budget doubles on attempts to “reconcile” the two worlds.

The Right Way

The interior designer and the acoustic engineer work together from day one. Acoustic panels can be beautiful if you know what to specify. Colour, texture, perforation pattern — all chosen in step with the acoustic calculation.

The First Step

I
Briefing

A first meeting of 60–90 minutes. We discuss the home’s layout, the project stage, the budget segment and your key wishes. It ends with a written summary of requirements.

II
Concept

In 2–3 weeks, a preliminary concept. A layout solution, a base specification, a first budget estimate. We discuss and refine.

III
Contract

We sign a contract for the full project. We fix the milestones, budget, timeline and areas of responsibility. From this point the team is dedicated to your project.

Glossary of Terms

Dolby Atmos

An object-based spatial audio format. A base configuration is 7.2.4 or 9.2.6 channels with an overhead tier.

DTS:X

An alternative object-based format. A rival to Atmos, supported by most modern processors.

IMAX Enhanced

A certification for home devices and content that reproduce image and sound in the original IMAX studio master.

THX

A certification standard for rooms and equipment developed by Lucasfilm. It covers requirements for viewing angle, acoustics and the room.

Reference Level

The benchmark loudness for calibrating home cinemas — 85 dB for the main channels and 115 dB for LFE.

MLP

Main Listening Position. The geometric and acoustic centre of the room, to which calibration is anchored.

RT60

Reverberation time. The interval over which sound pressure in the room falls by 60 dB. A key parameter of room acoustics.

Standing Waves

Low-frequency resonances caused by room proportions. Cured by geometry and bass traps, not by electronics.

Floating Floor

A floor structure mechanically isolated from the main slab. It blocks structure-borne noise from reaching adjacent rooms.

Joists

Timber or metal battens that support the floor. In cinemas they are set on vibration-isolating pads for decoupling.

Vibration Isolation

Mechanical decoupling of structures to block structure-borne noise. Achieved with isolation mounts, hangers and resilient pads.

Acoustically Transparent Screen

A micro-perforated screen fabric that lets sound pass through. It allows the centre channel to sit exactly behind the screen, anchoring dialogue to the image.

EASE

Enhanced Acoustic Simulator for Engineers. Professional software for acoustic room modelling at the design stage.

Vectorworks

A BIM platform for developing the working design of a cinema. It ties the architectural, engineering and design disciplines precisely into a single model.

StormAudio

A French maker of reference spatial-audio processors. Works with Atmos, DTS:X, Auro-3D and IMAX Enhanced.

RoomPerfect

Steinway Lyngdorf’s auto-calibration technology. It adapts the system’s sound to the specific room geometry.

Meyer Sound

An American maker of professional concert- and cinema-class loudspeakers. Used in reference auditoriums.

Meridian Acoustic

A British high-end speaker brand for home cinemas and multiroom systems. With its own digital signal processing.

Focal

A French maker of reference stereo speakers. Designed for two-channel music listening — not for cinema use.

Lumen

A unit of luminous flux. For a home cinema with the right screen, 2,500–3,000 lumens is enough.
